Key Fob Won't Program: A Locksmith's Checklist Before Blaming the Part

Ten checks in the order that saves the most time, and how to tell a bad part from a vehicle problem

When a key fob will not program, the cause is almost always one of ten things: the wrong FCC ID or board revision, the wrong frequency, the wrong chip generation, a used or previously programmed smart key, the vehicle's key-count limit, a tool without coverage for that year, a locked secure gateway on 2018+ Stellantis vehicles, a flat or wrong battery, the fob not sitting in the antenna or backup slot, or a missing PIN or immobilizer code. Work through those in order before you decide the part is bad, because in most "defective fob" calls the part is fine and one of the other nine is the problem.

Step 1: Is it the right FCC ID and board?

The FCC ID is the first filter, not the last. Toyota and Lexus smart keys share FCC IDs across different boards: HYQ14FBA appears as a G board 0020, an AG board and a 2110 board, and only the matching board registers. GM's OUC60270 covers many vehicles, but the 4-, 5- and 6-button versions are different part numbers. Honda smart keys carry a 72147 part number that pins down the board more tightly than the FCC ID does. Step 2: Is the frequency right?

A 433 MHz fob on a 315 MHz vehicle usually programs without complaint and starts the car, then does nothing at the buttons, because the immobilizer link is at 125 kHz and the remote link is not. The tool has no way to know. Read the band from the catalog listing or with your tool's frequency tester; the frequency guide lists which makes and years sit on which band, including Ford's 902 MHz PEPS keys and Toyota's 312/314 variants.

Step 3: Is the chip generation right?

A fob with the right shape and the wrong chip will fail at the immobilizer step rather than the remote step, and the tool usually does report this one, typically as "key not accepted" or a failed authentication. Honda is the common trap: ID46 through about 2014, ID47 from 2013, ID4A from 2018 on the Accord and 2022 on the Civic and CR-V, with the same shell across all three. Nissan splits similarly at 2013 (ID46 to ID47) and 2014 (ID4A). The catalog chip field and the transponder chip guide settle it.

Step 4: Is the smart key new, or used and locked?

Many smart keys write the vehicle's identity into the key on first registration and refuse a second vehicle afterwards. Toyota and Lexus 8A boards, Honda and Acura smart keys, Nissan and Infiniti KR5 keys, Hyundai/Kia and most Stellantis fobiks all behave this way to some degree. A "new" fob that was tested on a demo car is a used fob. Tools can often read a lock status (Lonsdor shows it on Toyota boards); if the key reports as used, retrying will not register it. Step 5: Has the vehicle hit its key limit?

Most immobilizers cap the number of registered keys; the commonly quoted limits are around seven on Toyota, six on Honda, eight on Ford, ten on GM and four or five on Nissan, but the figure varies by model and year, so verify with your tool. Vehicles that have passed through several owners can be full. The fix is an erase-all-keys routine followed by re-registering every key the customer still has, so every working key must be present on the job.

Step 6: Does the tool actually cover this vehicle?

Check the current vehicle list, not the marketing sheet. Coverage changes with firmware, some routines need a subscription, and add-a-key and all-keys-lost are often listed separately. Update the tool before the job, choose the exact model year, and read the on-screen notes on ignition state, doors and key placement. Step 7: Secure gateway on Stellantis

2018 and newer Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Fiat vehicles have a Security Gateway Module that blocks write commands from the OBD port. The tool connects and reads data, then fails at programming with a generic access error. You need either a physical SGW bypass cable fitted between the gateway connectors or authorised online unlock through the tool vendor's programme. The Jeep and Dodge/Ram guides give the routine.

Step 8: Battery

Most Xhorse and KEYDIY universal remotes ship without a battery. Fit a fresh battery of the type in the listing. A CR2032 forced into a CR2025 holder breaks the contact spring, and a low battery lets the LF side work while the RF side sends nothing. On a remote head key, the battery does not affect the transponder, so a car that starts with a dead-button key is a battery symptom, not a programming symptom. Step 9: Placement during programming

Smart-key registration uses the short-range LF antenna. Put the fob where the routine says: touching the start button, in the backup slot, or on the marked spot on the column, and hold it still until the tool confirms. A fob in a pocket or on the seat is the most common cause of "key not detected" on push-button vehicles. On a bladed key, insert it fully in the ignition and turn to the position the routine asks for.

Step 10: PIN, ISK or security access

Some platforms will not write a key without a code. Nissan needs a PIN derived from the BCM; Hyundai and Kia need a PIN from the VIN; Honda has a PIN on some routines; older Chrysler needs the 4-digit PIN; Ford uses a timed security access that takes roughly ten minutes on many models; VW and Audi need component security data on MQB. Tools calculate many of these, but not all, and a wrong PIN can lock the module for a period. Confirm the tool handles the PIN for that year before quoting the job.

Part or vehicle: how to decide

Ask two questions. First, does the vehicle accept a known-good key (the customer's working key re-registers, or a second identical fob from stock registers)? If yes, the vehicle and tool are fine and the first fob is suspect; if it rejects both, the problem is the vehicle, the tool or the setup. Second, does the suspect fob read correctly on the bench (chip ID and frequency both match the listing)? A fob that reads right but fails in the car points to placement, key count, gateway or PIN.

If the fob reads wrong on the bench (wrong chip family or dead RF), or reads right but a second identical unit programs while it does not, that is a bad part. If a key or remote won't program on the vehicle we listed it against, it is refunded within 30 days of delivery and we pay the return freight. Two conditions apply: the vehicle has to match the listing, and the part has to come back resaleable. Start the claim from /returns with the order number, the VIN and the tool and routine you used; that information is what lets the trade desk tell a listing error from a vehicle issue quickly.

FAQ

The fob programmed but the buttons do not work. Is the fob bad?

Usually not. Check the frequency first (315 vs 433 vs 902), then the battery, then whether the remote portion needs a separate remote-learn routine, which is the case on many GM, Toyota and Ford vehicles where the transponder and remote are registered in two steps.

The tool says "key not detected" on a smart key. What now?

Move the fob to the exact spot the routine specifies, usually touching the start button or in the backup slot, fit a fresh battery and try again. If it still fails, read the fob on the bench to confirm it is the right chip generation and not a used, locked key.

Can I reuse a smart key that was programmed to another car?

On most modern platforms, no. Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai/Kia and Stellantis smart keys generally lock to the first vehicle; some tools can unlock certain Toyota boards, but treat a used smart key as unusable unless the tool confirms otherwise.

Why does my tool fail on a 2019 Jeep after connecting fine?

The Security Gateway Module is blocking the write. Fit an SGW bypass cable or use the tool's authorised gateway unlock, then repeat the routine.

When is it the part and not the vehicle?

When a second identical fob programs on the same vehicle with the same tool and routine, or when the suspect fob reads with the wrong chip or no RF output on the bench. In that case use the 30-day programming guarantee via the returns page with the VIN and tool details.
