Which tool generates which key
The question every universal listing raises and almost none of them answer. The platforms are closed to each other — an Xhorse blank will not generate on an Autel tool, and no firmware update changes that.
Xhorse — XK, XN, XE, XM38 and XZ
The series letter in the part number tells you the platform, and the retail box colour confirms it in the hand — which is the fastest check when a box has been open on the van shelf for a month.

Match the blank to your tool
The platforms are closed to each other. An Xhorse blank generates on an Xhorse tool, an Autel IKEY on an Autel tool, a KEYDIY on a KEYDIY tool — no firmware update crosses that line. Check the table above first.

Generate the key on the tool
Pick the vehicle style and button count on the tool, and it writes that identity onto the blank. Wired series generate over a cable; wireless, Super Remote and smart-key series generate over the air.

Program it to the vehicle
From here it behaves like any aftermarket key — OBD or all-keys-lost as the platform requires. The universal part of the job is already finished.
Universal fobs, answered straight
What is a universal key fob?
A universal key fob is a blank, programmable remote that is not pre-coded to one vehicle. You generate it to the car in front of you with a key tool, then program it to the vehicle as you would any aftermarket key. One part number covers hundreds of makes and models instead of one, which is the entire reason to stock them: a handful of universal shells does the work a wall of vehicle-specific fobs used to.
Which tool do I need to program a universal key fob?
The tool has to match the brand of the blank, and the platforms are closed to each other — an Xhorse blank will not generate on an Autel tool and a KEYDIY blank will not generate on either. Xhorse XK, XN, XE and XM38 keys generate on Xhorse VVDI key tools. Autel MAXIIM IKEY generates on a KM100 on its own, on an IM508 with an XP400 Pro, on an IM608 with an XP400 or XP400 Pro, or on an IM608 Pro with an XP400 Pro. KEYDIY generates on a KD-X2, KD-MAX or Mini KD.
Does the Autel IM508 program IKEY keys?
Yes, but only with an XP400 Pro adapter connected — without it the IKEY menu does not appear on the tablet at all, which is the single most common reason a shop thinks their tool cannot do IKEY. Autel also sets a firmware floor of IMMO Program V3.94 or above for IKEY generation on every path except the KM100, which is exempt.
What is the difference between an Xhorse XK, XN, XE and XS key?
They are four different platforms in similar-looking shells, and the box colour tells you which is which. XK is the red box: a wired remote with no transponder, generated over a cable. XN is the blue box: the same idea generated wirelessly, with an NXP chip already inside. XE is the purple box, the Super Remote, which ships with the VVDI Super Chip fitted so one part covers the transponder types that chip emulates. XS is the orange box: a proximity smart key on the XM38 platform, for push-to-start vehicles.
Do universal key fobs work on every car?
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. A universal fob covers the vehicles its platform supports, and that list grows with tool firmware rather than being fixed forever. Coverage is strongest on the mainstream Japanese, Korean and American models a shop sees every week, and thinnest on newer proximity systems and premium European platforms, where an original part is sometimes the only thing that finishes the job. We will tell you when that is the case rather than sell you a fob that gets you halfway.
Are universal fobs as good as the original key?
They are aftermarket parts and we sell them as aftermarket parts. For everyday lock, unlock, trunk and remote-start work on the vehicles they cover, they do the job at a fraction of dealer cost, and the current generation of proximity blanks is a long way from the early aftermarket. Where a vehicle genuinely needs an original key, that is what we will tell you.
How many universal keys should a shop actually stock?
Far fewer than the vehicle-specific equivalent, which is the point. Most shops we supply settle on a small spread — a couple of the common smart-key styles for the makes they see most, one or two flip shells, and a wired remote line for the older work — and go deeper on each rather than wider. Buying universal blanks by the box?
Approved locksmith and shop accounts get volume tiers on universal stock, the same dispatch cutoff as the rest of the catalog, and a real person to check fitment and tool compatibility with before you order.
