About smart keys

A smart key (proximity key, push-to-start fob) never goes in an ignition. The vehicle looks for the fob through its antennas when a door handle or the start button is touched, and the fob answers on its remote frequency. The same shell usually carries the lock, unlock and trunk buttons and hides an emergency blade for a dead battery.

Programming is platform-specific. On many vehicles a new smart key is added through the OBD port with a key programmer; a large share also need a PIN or security code, and an all-keys-lost job can mean reading or unlocking a module first. Some platforms learn the remote buttons in the same procedure and some do not, so check your tool's coverage for the exact year and model before you commit to a part.

Two fobs can look identical and still refuse to program. The shell is the least reliable thing to match on; the codes printed on the back of the customer's fob, and on each listing below, are what decide it.
