About transponder keys

A transponder key has no buttons. A small chip in the head answers the vehicle's immobiliser when the key is in the ignition; a key cut correctly but without a chip the car recognises will turn the lock and still not start the engine.

The chip decides how the job is done. Some fixed-code and some encrypted chips can be copied from a working key with a cloning tool; many others have to be added to the immobiliser through the OBD port, and some of those need a PIN or security code. When every key is lost, the options narrow further, so confirm what your programmer supports for that chip and vehicle before you order.

The blade is the other half. The same chip family is sold on several keyway profiles, and a head shape that looks right can carry the wrong blade. Most transponder keys are sold uncut and are cut to code or duplicated from the original.
