They're all Autel, they're not cheap, and the spec sheets read like they do the same thing. They don't. KM100 is Autel's entry-level, keys-only device. Shops buy it as a cheap way to get into key programming without the IM608's price tag — with the tradeoff that it ages out of coverage faster and can't be pushed into ECU-level work later.
IM508 / IM508S sits in the middle. It's a tablet-based unit that combines key programming (transponder, remote, smart key) with Autel's MaxiSys diagnostic engine, so you get bidirectional control, key/remote learning across a wide OEM list, and IMMO functions like all-keys-lost and add-key on supported platforms. The 508S adds the APB112 key simulator/all-in-one key box, which matters for shops doing AKL on vehicles that need bench or bench-adjacent work rather than pure OBD programming.
IM608 / IM608 Pro is the top of the line: full diagnostics across systems (not just IMMO), broader bidirectional and ECU coding coverage, and the horsepower to handle the harder immobilizer cases — CAN FD vehicles, later-model platforms with layered security gateways, and OEM-level programming that the 508 line can't reach. It's the unit shops buy when key work is one part of a broader diagnostic and mobile-locksmith business, not the whole business.

What "programs a key" actually means here
None of these tools generate a working key out of thin air. Each one talks to the vehicle's immobilizer system to either learn an existing transponder/remote into the car, or — on supported platforms — read out security data (PIN/CS codes, EEPROM data) needed to add a key when all originals are lost. The tool's job is the programming session; it still needs a physical key or fob that matches the vehicle's transponder chip and, for remote-equipped vehicles, the correct frequency and FCC ID. A programmer with excellent coverage is useless paired with the wrong blank or the wrong fob.
That's the part shops sometimes skip when comparing tools on spec sheets alone: coverage claims describe what the tool can talk to, not whether you have the part to put in the car. Before buying up a tier for a vehicle you rarely see, check whether the gap is really a tool limitation or a parts-sourcing one.
FCC ID and part number compatibility still matter
Autel's vehicle coverage lists tell you which platforms the tool can program — they don't tell you which specific fob variant fits a given VIN. The same model year can ship with two or three different FCC IDs depending on trim, region, or a mid-year supplier change. Programming session aside, get in the habit of confirming the FCC ID stamped on the fob (or the customer's original) against the cross-reference part number before you order or program — it's the fastest way to avoid a return trip.
Firmware, subscriptions, and the real cost of ownership
The sticker price on any of these units is the beginning of the cost, not the end. Autel devices run on annual software subscriptions to keep vehicle coverage and security-algorithm data current; let a subscription lapse and newer platforms stop programming correctly. Factor that renewal into your buying decision, especially on the KM100 where the coverage list is already the thinnest — a lapsed subscription there can leave you unable to service even mid-tier late-model vehicles.
It's also worth checking, before you buy, whether the specific vehicles you see most often are on the current supported list for the tier you're considering — not just "supported by Autel" in general marketing copy.
Choosing between OBD-only and bench/bypass work
A meaningful share of newer vehicles — especially those with layered security gateways — can't be fully serviced through the OBD port alone for all-keys-lost work. That's where the 508S's key simulator/all-in-one box, or the 608's broader bench and bypass support, comes in. If your call volume includes a lot of AKL on vehicles from roughly the last five model years, that capability is often the real difference between the tiers, more than raw diagnostic breadth.

Does a KM100 do all-keys-lost work? On a limited list of supported vehicles, yes — but its AKL coverage is narrower than the IM508 or IM608, and it typically can't handle the bench-level or security-gateway workarounds newer platforms sometimes require.
Can I start with an IM508 and upgrade later? The 508 and 608 share Autel's ecosystem, but they're separate hardware purchases — there's no in-place hardware upgrade path. Some shops start with a 508S and add a 608 later once diagnostic work becomes a bigger share of the business, running both rather than trading in.
Do these tools work with aftermarket key fobs, or only manufacturer parts? Programming compatibility comes down to the transponder chip and remote protocol inside the fob matching what the vehicle expects — not the fob's brand.
