Every programmer's product listing leans on "supports 100+ makes" language. That's rarely false, but it's also rarely the whole story. Before buying, check three things specifically:
- Add-a-key vs. all-keys-lost coverage. A tool can add a key to a car with a working key present far more easily than it can start from zero. Confirm which mode is supported for the vehicles you actually work on.
- Update frequency and cost. Vehicle security systems change yearly. A programmer that hasn't been updated in two years will quietly lose coverage on current-model-year vehicles.
- Token or subscription structure. Some tools charge per programming session even after the hardware is paid for. Factor that into the real cost per job, not just the sticker price.
The Programmer Only Solves Half the Job
A programmer with perfect coverage is still useless without a fob that physically and electronically matches the vehicle. Two fobs with the same button layout can carry different chip families, different frequencies (typically 315 MHz or 433 MHz in North America), and different FCC IDs — and a mismatch on any of those will fail programming no matter how good the tool is.
