Key Programming Tools Locksmiths Use in 2026: Autel, Xhorse, Lonsdor

Remote generators vs OBD immobilizer programmers, and which universal remote line each tool writes

Car Key Source Trade DeskSeptember 12, 2026 6 min read
Key programming tool connected to a vehicle OBD port

The key programming tools working locksmiths rely on in 2026 fall into two groups: OBD immobilizer programmers that talk to the vehicle (Autel MaxiIM IM508 and IM608, Lonsdor K518, Advanced Diagnostics SmartPro, AutoProPAD, and Xhorse VVDI Key Tool Max Pro with its OBD cable) and remote generators that configure universal keys (Autel KM100, Xhorse Key Tool Max Pro, Key Tool Plus and Mini Key Tool, Lonsdor KW100, KEYDIY KD-X2 and KD-MAX). Each generator only writes its own brand of universal remote, so the tool you buy decides which universal line you will stock. Token and subscription models vary by brand and change over time; check current terms with the maker before you commit.

The two jobs a "key programmer" can mean

Locksmiths use one phrase for two different tasks, and most tools do one of them well.

Remote generation means taking a blank universal remote (Xhorse XM38 or XN/XK/XE remotes, Autel IKEY, KEYDIY ZB/NB/B series, Lonsdor LT20/FO30/HD30/NS30 boards) and writing the vehicle's FCC ID, frequency and, where the remote has a programmable chip, the transponder type into it. After generation the remote is equivalent to a vehicle-specific aftermarket fob, but it still has to be registered to the car.

OBD immobilizer programming means plugging into the diagnostic port, gaining security access, and telling the vehicle to accept the transponder. This is the step every add-a-key and all-keys-lost job needs, whether the key is a universal remote or a vehicle-specific fob. How the two steps fit together is explained in how smart keys are programmed and how to program a key fob.

Some tools do both. Most shops end up with one strong OBD programmer plus one or two generators for the universal lines they stock.

Coverage claims change with every software release, so treat the table as a description of what each tool is designed for rather than a guarantee for a specific vehicle. Check the maker's current vehicle list before you buy for a particular make.

Autel: IM508, IM608 and KM100

Autel splits its line by depth. The IM508 is the entry immobilizer tablet and pairs with an XP400 (or XP400 Pro) key programmer for transponder and EEPROM work. The IM608 adds broader immobilizer coverage, advanced ECU functions and full diagnostics in one unit. The KM100 is a smaller generator for IKEY universal smart keys with some immobilizer functions; it is sold on its own and as a kit with IKEY remotes. Autel's guide to the range and the IKEY line is at Autel key programmer guide and the brand hub at /universal/autel.

Autel's business model has used subscriptions for software updates after an initial included period; some functions have also used per-use tokens. Check current terms.

Xhorse: Key Tool Max Pro, Key Tool Plus, Mini Key Tool

Xhorse is the largest universal-remote ecosystem in the trade. The Mini Key Tool is a pocket generator driven by a phone app; the Key Tool Max Pro is a hand-held unit with built-in remote generation, transponder cloning, remote frequency testing and, with the bundled OBD cable, OBD immobilizer coverage; the Key Tool Plus is the tablet-format flagship with deeper immobilizer and diagnostic capability. All three generate the same Xhorse remotes, so an XM38 smart key or XN wireless remote generated on a Mini works exactly like one generated on a Plus.

The VVDI Key Tool Max Pro is in stock with the illuminated OBD-to-DB15 cable. The remotes and chips it writes are at /universal/xhorse, including the XSTO01EN Toyota XM38 smart key, the XSKF20EN knife-style smart key and XT57B super chips.

Xhorse has historically granted points or tokens for remote generation with purchases of its remotes, while some OBD functions and Toyota smart-key generation have used separate tokens. Check current terms, since the rules differ by remote type.

Lonsdor: K518 and KW100

Lonsdor's reputation in North America rests on Toyota and Lexus coverage. The K518 (now in ISE and Pro versions) is a full OBD immobilizer programmer with its own line of universal boards: LT20 for Toyota, Lexus and Subaru, LT30 for newer Toyota, FO30 and FO3H for Ford, HD30 for Honda, NS30 for Nissan, CL30 for GM and BM3S for BMW G-chassis. The KW100 is a compact Bluetooth generator for the LT20 boards only, supporting add-key and all-keys-lost use, and is also stocked as the KW100-S kit with two LT20 boards. A KW100 does not replace an OBD tool; it prepares the board, and the vehicle registration still runs through a K518, an Autel or another OBD programmer.

The Lonsdor boards are at /universal/lonsdor. Lonsdor has used an annual subscription for K518 updates after an initial period, and some functions have used tokens; check current terms.

KEYDIY: KD-X2 and KD-MAX

KEYDIY built its name on inexpensive remote generation. The KD-X2 is a hand-held generator that writes the B series (remote only), NB series (remote with integrated chip) and ZB series (smart key) remotes, and also clones 4C, 4D, ID48 and 8A transponders using KEYDIY cloning chips. The KD-MAX is the tablet version that adds OBD immobilizer functions on top of generation. The KEYDIY line, including ZB10-5 Honda-style and ZB12-4 Ford-style smart keys and the NB18 GM-style flip key, is at /universal/keydiy.

KEYDIY remote generation has generally been free with the remote, while some OBD and cloning functions have used tokens or subscriptions. Check current terms.

Advanced Diagnostics SmartPro and AutoProPAD

Neither of these generates universal remotes. They are OBD immobilizer programmers, and shops buy them for coverage and reliability on vehicle-specific keys.

Advanced Diagnostics SmartPro is the successor to the MVP Pro and T-Code lines; it is licensed per manufacturer software module, with ongoing update subscriptions, and remains common in shops that program a lot of domestic and European vehicles. AutoProPAD, distributed by Xtool for the North American locksmith market, competes on broad coverage with a tablet interface and an annual update subscription after the included period. Both pair naturally with a separate generator if you also want universal remotes. Check current terms for both.

How to choose between them

If your work is mostlyA sensible core setup
General add-a-key and all-keys-lost across domestic and Asian makesOne OBD programmer (Autel IM608, Lonsdor K518, SmartPro or AutoProPAD) plus one generator for the universal line you stock
Toyota and Lexus heavyLonsdor K518 or Autel IM608, with a KW100 and LT20 boards for smart keys
Remote replacement and duplication with low capital outlayXhorse Mini Key Tool or KEYDIY KD-X2, sending immobilizer work to a partner shop or adding an OBD tool later
Highest coverage in one unitXhorse Key Tool Plus or Autel IM608 Pro

The longer version of this decision, including which universal lines fit which makes, is in choosing a key programmer. The universal remote hub is at /universal.

FAQ

Do I need both a generator and an OBD programmer?

If you stock universal remotes, yes: the generator configures the remote and the OBD tool registers it to the car. If you only sell vehicle-specific fobs, an OBD programmer alone is enough.

Can an Xhorse tool generate a KEYDIY or Autel remote?

No. Each brand's generator writes only its own remote line, which is why the tool decision and the stocking decision go together.

Is the Lonsdor KW100 a full key programmer?

No. It generates Lonsdor LT20 Toyota and Lexus boards over Bluetooth; registering the key to the vehicle still needs an OBD programmer such as a K518 or an Autel IM-series unit.

Do these tools need subscriptions?

Most makers include a period of updates with the tool and then charge for continued updates, and some functions use per-use tokens. The details differ by brand and change, so check current terms before buying.

Which tool is best for Toyota smart keys?

Lonsdor and Autel both have strong Toyota and Lexus coverage, and the Lonsdor LT20 boards with a KW100 give a practical universal smart-key route. Verify the specific year and board against the tool's current vehicle list.
