Volvo Key Fob Replacement: Fob Types, FCC IDs and Part Numbers
Which Volvo fob is which, how to identify it by FCC ID, and what each generation needs to program.
The fastest way to match a Volvo key fob is the FCC ID printed on the back, then the original Volvo part number. Four fob families cover most Volvos on the road: the 2004-2013 five-button Fobik (LTQV0315TX), the 2004-2015 five-button flip key (LQNP2T-APU), the 2007-2018 Keyless Drive smart keys (KR55WK49264 and KR55WK49266), and the 2016-2020 four-button smart key (YG0HUF8423). Which one a car takes depends on the model, the year and whether it has keyless entry, so confirm against the fob itself before you order.

Fitment ranges overlap and Volvo changed running specifications mid-year on several models. Treat the table as a starting point, then match the FCC ID and part number. Our FCC ID guide shows where to find them, and Find My Fob lets you search by vehicle, FCC ID or part number.
Older transponder keys: S40, V40, S60, S80, V70
Before remotes became standard, many Volvos used a plain transponder key. Two blade styles matter here. The 1996-2004 S40 and V40 use an HU56 two-track key with a 44 chip. The 1999-2013 S60, S80, V70, XC70 and XC90 use an S66NN-P four-track key with a 48 chip. These are cut keys with an embedded chip, so the job is cutting plus transponder programming, not a remote match.
If you are not sure what chip you are dealing with, our transponder chip ID guide and the transponder key primer cover the basics. Plastic-head blanks for this era also turn up in the catalog, including the S66NN-P high security plastic head key and the VL8-P plastic head key blank.
The Fobik and the flip key (2004-2015)
The five-button Fobik (LTQV0315TX) is the remote used on the P1-platform cars such as the C30, C70, S40 and V50. We list it with a Megamos ID 48 chip at 315 MHz. See the 2004-2013 Volvo five-button Fobik for the exact listing.
The five-button remote flip key (LQNP2T-APU, original part number 8688799) is the blade-and-remote style used on the larger P2 cars such as the S60, S80, V70, XC70 and XC90. The flip blade is a cut key, so budget time on the machine as well as at the programmer. The 2004-2015 Volvo flip key is the matching listing, and you can browse the wider remote flip key category.
Keyless Drive smart keys (2007-2018)
Volvo's Keyless Drive smart keys come in two common shapes, and the difference is easy to miss on a service counter. KR55WK49264 is the five-button version (original part number 30659637). KR55WK49266 is the six-button version (original part number 30659498). The extra button matters, so count them before you order. Both carry a mechanical emergency blade, normally HU101, which is cut separately. Our catalog lists emergency keys for 2007-2017 and 2016-2021 Volvos, and for the 2004-2013 C70, C30, S40 and V50.
Frequency appears as 433 or 434 MHz depending on the listing, so check the product page for the exact figure on the fob you are quoting. For the background on why that matters, see our 315 vs 433 vs 902 MHz guide. Matching listings: the five-button KR55WK49264 and the six-button KR55WK49266. The wider smart key category shows everything else we list.
Newer cars: the four-button smart key
Later Volvos on the SPA platform moved to a four-button smart key. We list YG0HUF8423 (original part numbers 32256980 and 31652604) for 2016-2020 models including the S90, V90, XC40, XC60 and XC90. It is an aftermarket part, shown with an 8A-type chip at 433 MHz. Newer models and the very latest key designs may not be covered, so do not assume a late-model Volvo is in this family without checking the FCC ID.
Programming: what to expect
Programming depends on the generation, and we will not pretend there is one answer. In general:
- Older transponder keys and the P1/P2-era remotes usually need a programmer with Volvo coverage for the exact model and year.
- Keyless Drive smart keys are an add-a-key or all-keys-lost job on the tool, and all keys lost is slower and costlier than adding a spare.
- Late-model Volvos may require online access or a security procedure on top of the tool.
Always check your own programmer's vehicle list before you quote, because coverage differs by tool and software version. Our key fob programming guide explains the onboard-versus-tool split.
FAQ
How do I find the right Volvo key fob? Read the FCC ID off the back of the existing fob, then confirm the original part number. If the fob is lost, work from the VIN and model year, then verify the button count and blade type with the customer.
Are the five-button and six-button Volvo smart keys interchangeable? No. KR55WK49264 and KR55WK49266 are different fobs with different button layouts and original part numbers. Order the one that matches the fob or the car's feature set.
Do the Volvo fobs you list count as OEM? No. Every Volvo fob in our catalog is aftermarket. Original Volvo part numbers are shown only so you can cross-reference the fit.
Do Volvo keys need a dealer? Not always. Many can be handled by a locksmith with the right programmer, but late-model keys can need extra security steps. Check tool coverage first.
