Xhorse Universal Remotes: XM38, XS/XK/XN/XE Codes & Super Chips

Xhorse universal remote codes are read left to right: the first two letters give the remote type (XS = universal smart key, XK = wired universal remote, XN = wireless universal remote, XE = Super Remote with a built-in super chip), the next two or three letters give the make the shell is styled after (TO Toyota, FO Ford, HO Honda, HY Hyundai/Kia, NI Nissan, BU Buick/GM, KF knife, DM MQB, and so on), and the EN suffix marks the English export version. XM38 is Xhorse's smart-key platform for Toyota-type 8A/4D systems and needs a VVDI Key Tool Max, Key Tool Max Pro or Key Tool Plus to generate. XT27A and XT57B are loose super chips that the same tools write to whichever transponder type the vehicle expects. Every remote below is an aftermarket blank generated with the tool for supported vehicles; confirm the vehicle on the tool's list before you quote the job.

How to read an Xhorse model code

Take XSKF21EN and split it into four parts.

The four remote-type prefixes you will meet on carkeysource.com are:

• XS — universal smart key. Proximity and push-to-start. Generated in the tool, then programmed to the vehicle over OBD like any other smart key.
• XK — wired universal remote or flip key. It plugs into the tool with a cable for generation. The most common type in shop stock.
• XN — wireless universal remote or flip key. Generated over the tool's built-in RF link, so no cable and no need to open the shell.
• XE — Super Remote. A flip key with the XT27 super chip already soldered on the board, so one remote covers both the RF and the transponder job.

The make-style letters describe the shell, not the vehicle list. TO is Toyota style, FO Ford, HO Honda, HY Hyundai/Kia, NI Nissan, BU Buick/GM, AU Audi, KF knife style, DM VW MQB style, CH Chrysler, JP Jeep, PS Porsche, LR Land Rover, GA Volkswagen style, LEX Lexus, MQB MQB wired, DS generic and B5 the old VW B5 flip. A Ford-style shell can be generated as a remote for a non-Ford vehicle if the tool supports it; the styling is for the customer's hand, the electronics are universal.

The number between the style letters and EN is a variant index. Xhorse reuses it across prefixes (XKHY02EN and XNAU22EN are unrelated), so always read the full code. Second-generation remotes usually carry a 2x index, which is why you see XKTO22EN, XKHO22EN and XNBU21EN next to the older XKFO02EN.

What XM38 means and which VVDI tool generates it

XM38 is the Xhorse smart-key platform built for Toyota and Lexus proximity systems that use the 8A (128-bit) and 4D (80-bit) transponder boards, and it has since been used for other XS shells such as the Chrysler-, Porsche-, Land Rover- and Volkswagen-style keys in the table below. An XM38 key is a blank until the tool writes the vehicle's key type into it. On a Toyota all-keys-lost that means the tool reads the immobiliser data, generates the XM38 key as the matching 8A or 4D smart key, and you then add it to the car over OBD.

Tools that generate XM38 keys are the VVDI Key Tool Max, the VVDI Key Tool Max Pro and the VVDI Key Tool Plus. Car Key Source stocks the Key Tool Max Pro with built-in OBD, which handles generation and the OBD programming step in one unit. The Mini Key Tool generates standard XK, XN and XE remotes but is not the tool to rely on for XM38 smart keys; check its current firmware list if that is all you carry.

XT27A vs XT57B super chips

Both are universal programmable transponders: the tool writes them as the chip ID the vehicle expects, so you carry one bag of chips instead of a drawer of 4D, 46, 47 and 8A blanks.

The practical rule: XT27A covers the common transponder families that made the super chip worth having, and XT57B is the newer part Xhorse points you to when the vehicle's chip type is not on the XT27A list. The exact list of chip IDs each one emulates depends on the tool firmware, so read it off the Key Tool before you pick a chip, and keep both on the van. Which Xhorse remote for which job

• Remote-only job, transponder already in the key or car is add-key with a chip to hand: an XK or XN remote in the style the customer expects. Wired XK is the low-cost default; XN saves the cable when you generate on the van.
• Flip key that needs both remote and transponder: an XE Super Remote. The XT27 chip on the board is written by the tool during generation, so there is no separate chip to glue in.
• Proximity / push-to-start: an XS smart key. Toyota, Lexus and the other XM38 styles need a Key Tool Max, Max Pro or Plus; the knife-style and make-style XS keys follow the same generation-then-OBD flow.
• Mechanical blank with a chip: cut the customer's keyway and drop in an XT27A or XT57B written to the vehicle's chip type.

FAQ

What is the difference between Xhorse XK and XN remotes?

Both are universal remotes generated by a VVDI Key Tool, but XK remotes connect to the tool with a cable and XN remotes are generated wirelessly over the tool's RF link. Electrically they do the same job; XN saves the cable and the shell opening.

What does the EN at the end of an Xhorse part number mean?

EN marks the English export version of the remote. Codes without it are the same hardware sold for other markets, so the EN version is the one sold into the US and Canadian trade.

Which tool do I need to generate an XM38 smart key?

A VVDI Key Tool Max, Key Tool Max Pro or Key Tool Plus. Car Key Source stocks the Key Tool Max Pro with the OBD cable, which covers both generation and programming the key to the vehicle.

Is XT57B a replacement for XT27A?

XT57B is the newer super chip with a wider list of emulated transponder types, so it covers what XT27A does and more, subject to tool firmware. XT27A is still the chip fitted inside most XE Super Remotes and remains a valid choice where its chip list covers the vehicle.

Do Xhorse universal remotes come with a blade or battery?

No. XK, XN and XE flip remotes ship without a blade and every remote ships without the CR2032 battery, so stock the blade profiles you cut most and a box of CR2032s alongside the remotes.

Are Xhorse universal remotes OEM parts?
