Toyota Key Fob Programming

Smart keys, remote head keys and the Toyota board numbers that decide whether a fob will ever pair.

Most people searching for toyota key fob programming are not planning to do the work alone — they are working out what has to be bought and who has to touch the vehicle. This page answers both halves: what the Toyota system actually requires, and which parts to have in hand before the job starts.

The system on these vehicles

Toyota uses Toyota Smart Key System. Toyota is the make where the FCC ID alone is not enough. The board number stamped inside the fob (0140, 0351, and so on) has to match what the vehicle expects, and two fobs with the same FCC ID and different boards will not behave the same way. Confirm the board before you order, not after the customer is on the bench.

Before you order the fob

The wrong fob is the single most common reason a programming job stalls. Confirm all four of these against the customer's original, not against the model name:

  • FCC ID — printed on the back of the original fob.
  • Part number — ties the fob to the trim level and its button set.
  • Frequency — 315 MHz and 433 MHz parts look identical and are not interchangeable.
  • Battery type — CR2032, CR2450 and friends; worth stocking alongside the fob.

If any of those are unknown, run the original through Find My Fob or search by FCC ID before you commit to a part.

Programming a Toyota fob, step by step

Applies to: Toyota / Scion / Lexus and some Pontiac-badged twins with a bladed key and separate keyless remote (roughly 2000-2015). Smart Key proximity fobs are not covered by this sequence.

You need: every remote you want working at the end. Entering programming mode erases the stored list.

  1. With the key out of the ignition, unlock and open the driver's door. All other doors must be closed.
  2. Within 5 seconds: insert the key into the ignition without turning it and pull it back out. Do this twice.
  3. Within 40 seconds: close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key once more.
  4. Within 40 seconds: close and open the driver's door twice again, then insert the key and turn the ignition to ON.
  5. Turn the ignition back to OFF and remove the key. The door locks cycle to confirm programming mode.
  6. Within 40 seconds, press LOCK and UNLOCK together for about 1.5 seconds, then press LOCK once. The locks cycle to confirm the remote was accepted.
  7. Repeat step 6 for each remaining remote, then open the driver's door to exit. Test every button.

Note: the lock-cycle feedback tells you whether the vehicle is in add mode or rewrite mode. If a previously working remote stops responding, reprogram all remotes in the same session.

When all keys are lost

All-keys-lost on Toyota smart key vehicles generally means either a programmer with current Toyota coverage and seed-key support, or immobiliser reset box work on the older platforms. Some 2021+ vehicles have moved to a subscription-gated path — verify coverage for the exact year and trim before you commit to the job.
