How to Open a Wholesale Car Key Account: What Suppliers Check
What is verified, why most Car Key Source applications approve instantly, and what to have ready

To open a wholesale car key account, a locksmith supplier checks that you are a real trade business: a business licence or locksmith licence where your state or province issues one, a business listing or website, a resale or tax certificate where your jurisdiction uses them, and a working business phone. Most US states do not license locksmiths (Florida repealed its licence in July 2025) and most Canadian provinces do not either, so the check usually rests on the business itself. At Car Key Source the application is four short fields (business name, your name, work email and phone), it is free to apply with no minimums and no card required, trade pricing is unlocked with an approved wholesale account, and most applications are approved instantly. Apply at /apply.
Why suppliers gate trade pricing at all
Wholesale key and remote pricing is gated for two reasons. The first is that trade pricing only works if it is not the same price the public sees; a supplier that shows everyone the same number is a retailer with a discount code. The second is the programming guarantee and returns policy: a supplier can refund a fob that will not program and pay the return freight because the buyer is a professional who matched the FCC ID and used a proper tool. Extending that to walk-in consumers would break the economics.
So the gate is not there to keep locksmiths out. It is there to confirm you are one. A well-designed application asks for the minimum that proves it and does not ask for a licence number in a jurisdiction that does not issue one.
What suppliers generally check
Requirements vary by supplier and jurisdiction. These are the items a wholesale key supplier commonly asks for; not every supplier asks for all of them.
| Item | What it proves | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Business name and legal form | That an actual business is applying, not an individual | Everywhere |
| Business licence or locksmith licence number | That the business is registered, or licensed where the trade is regulated | Only where the state or province issues one; most US states and Canadian provinces do not license locksmiths |
| Business listing or website | That the business is findable and describes locksmith or automotive key work | Everywhere; a Google Business Profile, a website or a directory listing usually suffices |
| Resale or sales-tax certificate | That you resell the goods and can buy without sales tax where the rules allow | US states with sales tax; Canadian GST/HST registration where applicable |
| Business phone and email | That someone can be reached at the business, and that the email is not a throwaway | Everywhere |
| Ship-to address | That deliveries go to a shop, unit or a named mobile base | Some suppliers; a mobile-only operator working from home may be asked a follow-up question |
In the US, the licence question is the one that trips people up. Most states have no locksmith licence. Where one exists it is a state-level trade licence; Florida repealed its licence in July 2025. A supplier that insists on a licence number in a state that does not issue one is either using a form written for another state or is not set up for your market; in that case, a business listing and resale certificate are the documents to lead with.
In Canada, the position is similar: most provinces do not license automotive locksmiths, so suppliers verify the business registration, listing and phone instead. For context on which suppliers gate pricing, see Where Locksmiths Buy Key Fobs in Canada and Where Locksmiths Buy Key Fobs in the US.
Why most Car Key Source applications are approved instantly
Car Key Source verifies the business, not a licence number in a place that does not issue one. Per the wholesale terms, verification is "a licence where your state issues one, or your listing, website or resale certificate where it doesn't." The application itself is four short fields: business name, your name, work email and phone, plus a selection of whether you order from the US or Canada and a confirmation that you are a trade buyer purchasing for resale or professional use. Because the form asks only for what identifies the business, most applications are approved instantly, and you can browse and build quotes while an application that needs review is looked at.
It is free to apply, there are no minimums and no card is required to open the account. Orders are prepaid by card, so there is no credit application and no account to settle. Apply at /apply; the terms are set out at /wholesale.
What an approved account unlocks
| Unlocked | Detail |
|---|---|
| Trade pricing | Every listing shows the trade price once you are logged in; CAD for Canadian accounts, USD for US accounts |
| Volume ladder | 5–9 units −5%, 10–24 −10%, 25+ −15%, applied automatically per SKU line at checkout |
| Ordering | Vehicle-specific fobs and keys, universal remotes from Xhorse, Lonsdor, KEYDIY and Autel, Original Lishi tools, the genuine OEM line and multi-unit bundles |
| Domestic dispatch | US orders ship from our Florida warehouse; Canadian orders ship from Ontario; nothing crosses the border, so there is no customs, duty or brokerage for the buyer |

What to have ready before you apply
You can complete the Car Key Source form from a phone in a couple of minutes, but having these to hand avoids a follow-up.
- The exact business name as it appears on your registration, invoices or Google Business Profile, so the name on the form matches what a supplier can find.
- A work email on your business domain where you have one; a business address is easier to match to a listing than a personal one.
- Your business phone, and answer it: a supplier that cannot match the business may call.
- A link to your website, Google Business Profile or directory listing, in case it is requested. If you are mobile-only with no website, a listing that shows your business name, phone and locksmith services stands in for it.
- If your state issues a resale certificate or your province has you registered for GST/HST, keep the number nearby in case it is requested.
- Your locksmith licence number, only if your state or province issues one.
After approval: making the account pay
The account is only useful if you use the trade pricing well. Three habits matter.
Match before you buy. Read the FCC ID, part number, chip and years on the listing against the customer's original. The programming guarantee covers a part that will not program on the listed vehicle; it cannot cover a part ordered for the wrong vehicle. See How to Find the FCC ID on a Key Fob.
Buy to the ladder and the freight line. A van stock order that clears the free-freight threshold and reaches a volume tier costs less per fob than the same parts bought one at a time. Stocking the Right Fobs explains how to choose those parts.
Know the grade. Every listing states whether it is aftermarket or genuine OEM. Quote accordingly and describe it to the customer accordingly; Aftermarket vs Genuine OEM Car Keys covers the wording.
FAQ
Do I need a locksmith licence to open a wholesale car key account?
Only where your state or province issues one. Most US states do not license locksmiths, Florida repealed its licence in July 2025, and most Canadian provinces do not license the trade either, so suppliers generally verify the business instead.
What does Car Key Source ask for on the application?
Four short fields: business name, your name, work email and phone, plus whether you order from the US or Canada and a confirmation that you are a trade buyer purchasing for resale or professional use. Verification is a licence where your state issues one, or your listing, website or resale certificate where it doesn't.
How quickly is a Car Key Source account approved?
Most applications are approved instantly. An application that needs review takes longer, and you can browse and build quotes while it is looked at; the fastest way through is to make sure the business name and phone on the form match your public listing.
Can a mobile-only locksmith without a shop open an account?
Yes. Verification is a licence where your state issues one, or your listing, website or resale certificate where it doesn't, so a business listing that shows your name, phone and locksmith services stands in for a storefront.
What does an approved account unlock?
Trade pricing in your currency, the volume ladder of 5–9 units −5%, 10–24 −10%, 25+ −15%, ordering across the catalogue including the genuine OEM line and bundles, domestic dispatch with no customs or brokerage, free freight over $250 counted on list prices, 30-day returns on unused stock and the programming guarantee.
Does the account cost anything or have a minimum order?
It is free to apply, there are no minimums and no card is required to open the account; orders are prepaid by card, so there is no credit application. Free freight applies over $250 (USD in the US, CAD in Canada), counted on list prices.
