Mitsubishi Key Fob Replacement: ID 46 Keys & OUC644M Smart Key
MIT16A and MIT17 transponder keys, the OUC644M-KEY-N smart key, and where to go when the part is not listed

Mitsubishi key fob replacement for the 2004–2020 range comes down to two systems: a Philips ID 46 "MITS" transponder in the MIT16A (2004–2007 Eclipse, Galant, Endeavor) and MIT17 (2007–2019 Lancer, Outlander, Mirage, i-MiEV and others) blade keys, and the OUC644M-KEY-N 4-button smart key on 315 MHz for push-button Lancer, Outlander and Outlander Sport from 2008 to 2020. Both are programmed through the OBD port with a professional tool; the ID 46 transponder keys are also clone-friendly. Car Key Source's Mitsubishi coverage is focused on these five listings, including one genuine OEM Outlander smart key, and anything outside them goes through the sourcing request path rather than a guess.
How do I identify which Mitsubishi key the customer needs?
Look at the ignition first. A turn-key Mitsubishi from 2004 onward almost always has a transponder in the head of the key: the MIT16A profile on 2004–2007 Eclipse, Galant and Endeavor, then the MIT17 profile on 2007–2019 cars. A push-button Lancer, Outlander or Outlander Sport has the OUC644M-KEY-N smart key, with the FCC ID printed on the back of the fob and a Mitsubishi part number in the 8637xxxx series.
| System | Years (verify on vehicle) | Models (per catalog) | Key | Chip | FCC ID | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transponder, MIT16A blade | 2004–2007 | Eclipse, Galant, Endeavor | Blade key, no remote | Philips ID 46 MITS | — | — |
| Transponder, MIT17 blade | 2007–2019 | Eclipse, Endeavor, Galant, i-MiEV, Lancer, Mirage, Outlander, RVR | Blade key, no remote (PN MIT17A-PT) | 46 | — | — |
| Smart key | 2008–2017 | Lancer, Outlander Sport | 4-button smart key, PN 8637B885 / 8637A228 | PCF7952A / HITAG 2 / 46 | OUC644M-KEY-N | 315 MHz |
| Smart key, genuine OEM | 2014–2020 | Outlander | 4-button smart key, PN 8637A817 / 8637A316 | — | OUC644M-KEY-N | 315 MHz |
The smart key part numbers are worth a second look. The aftermarket listing cross-references 8637B885 and 8637A228 for the 2008–2017 Lancer and Outlander Sport, while the genuine OEM listing carries 8637A316 and 8637A817 for the 2014–2020 Outlander. Same FCC ID, different Mitsubishi part numbers, and the two are not guaranteed interchangeable across model and year — match the number on the customer's fob, or confirm with the VIN through the dealer parts desk if there is no fob left.
Note that the Mitsubishi transponder keys in the catalog are blade keys without a remote. The separate keyless entry remote on those cars, where fitted, is not currently listed.
What chip is in a Mitsubishi key?
Mitsubishi used the Philips / NXP ID 46 family across this whole era, in the "MITS" configuration on the transponder keys and in the PCF7952A HITAG 2 form inside the smart key. That is good news for a locksmith: ID 46 is one of the best-supported chip families in the trade, so add-a-key by OBD is routine on Autel, Lonsdor, Xhorse and Advanced Diagnostics tools, and the transponder keys can also be cloned onto a compatible 46 chip with a KD-X2 or similar cloner when the customer still has a working key. Read the transponder chip ID guide if you need the wider context on 46 variants.
Older Mitsubishis outside the catalog range used different chips and different blade profiles; do not assume ID 46 on anything earlier than 2004 without reading the existing key.
How is a Mitsubishi key programmed?
- Transponder keys (MIT16A, MIT17): OBD add-a-key with a professional programmer when a working key exists. Cloning is the faster route on a duplicate job. All-keys-lost is an OBD job on most tools but takes longer because the immobilizer has to be read first; check your tool's Mitsubishi coverage for the year.
- OUC644M-KEY-N smart key: OBD programming with a tool that lists Mitsubishi smart-key support. Add-a-key is short; all-keys-lost on the Outlander and Lancer requires the tool to handle the immobilizer read and may need a longer session on the vehicle.
- Remote functions: on the smart key they program with the key. There is no reliable customer-performed onboard procedure for the transponder or smart key on these generations.
For the general workflow, see how to program a key fob and, for tool selection, choosing a key programmer.
Aftermarket or genuine OEM on a Mitsubishi?
Car Key Source carries one genuine OEM Mitsubishi part: the 2014–2020 Mitsubishi Outlander 4-button smart key, FCC ID OUC644M-KEY-N (OEM). It is the right answer when the customer wants a Mitsubishi-branded fob, on a lease return, or when the shop prefers the factory part on a late-model Outlander. The OEM hub lists genuine parts across other makes.
The other four Mitsubishi rows are aftermarket, graded AM. The 2008–2017 Lancer / Outlander Sport 4-button smart key is the aftermarket alternative on the same FCC ID, and the MIT16A and MIT17 transponder keys are aftermarket blanks. All of them are listed against the vehicles they program to, so the programming guarantee applies: if a key or remote won't program on the vehicle we listed it against, it is refunded within 30 days of delivery and we pay the return freight, provided the vehicle matches the listing and the part comes back resaleable. For the general trade-off, see aftermarket vs genuine OEM car keys.

What if the Mitsubishi key I need is not listed?
Say so rather than substitute. Remote head keys for the 2000s Galant and Eclipse, keyless entry remotes for the transponder-key cars, Mirage and Outlander smart keys on later FCC IDs, and anything from 2021 onward are not in the catalog today. The right route is a sourcing request: send the trade desk the FCC ID, the Mitsubishi part number from the back of the fob, and the VIN, and the desk will tell you whether it can be sourced and on what timeline rather than guessing. You can also use find my fob to search by FCC ID across the whole catalog first, in case the part is listed under another make.
FAQ
What transponder chip does a Mitsubishi key use?
Mitsubishi keys from 2004 to 2019 in the catalog use the Philips ID 46 family — the "MITS" configuration in MIT16A and MIT17 blade keys and PCF7952A HITAG 2 inside the OUC644M-KEY-N smart key. Verify on the existing key for anything earlier than 2004.
Can a Mitsubishi transponder key be cloned?
Yes. ID 46 MITS transponder keys clone onto a compatible 46 chip with a KD-X2 or similar cloner when the customer has a working key, which avoids an OBD session; the smart key must be programmed on the vehicle.
What frequency is the Mitsubishi OUC644M-KEY-N smart key?
315 MHz on both the aftermarket 2008–2017 Lancer / Outlander Sport listing and the genuine OEM 2014–2020 Outlander listing. Match the Mitsubishi part number on the customer's fob, because the two listings carry different 8637-series numbers.
Is there a genuine OEM Mitsubishi key at Car Key Source?
Yes, one: the 2014–2020 Mitsubishi Outlander 4-button smart key, FCC ID OUC644M-KEY-N, graded OEM. The other four Mitsubishi rows are aftermarket and are described as such.
Does Car Key Source cover every Mitsubishi model?
No. Mitsubishi coverage is focused on the five listings above, and later Outlander, Eclipse Cross and Mirage keys are not stocked at the moment; use the sourcing request path with the FCC ID and part number for anything outside the list.
