- Slide or fold out the emergency blade using the release button on the edge of the key.
- With the blade extended, locate the small tab or seam near the base where the blade folds out — this is where the battery tray releases, not the flat face of the key.
- Slide the tray or shell open. Most chrome SmartKeys use two CR2025 cells, not one.
- Note the polarity stamped into the tray before removing both batteries — reinserting one backward is a common cause of a "dead" key that actually has a working battery.

- Insert a plastic pry tool into that notch and twist gently — the shell separates along the edge, not across the middle.
- This generation typically uses a single CR2032 battery, oriented positive-side up (facing the front logo) on most model years.
- Snap the shell back together starting at the hinge end, then test both button and passive entry (walking up to the door without pressing anything, if the car has Keyless-Go).
Flat Keyless-Go fob
- Look for a small pull-tab or seam on the back panel — Mercedes moved the release point off the visible face on this generation specifically to keep the body flush for passive-entry sensors.
- A thin case-opening tool works better than a wide pry tool here; the tolerances are tighter than the arrow fob.
- Battery is almost always a single CR2032.
- Reseat the back panel evenly — a fob that doesn't sit flush after reassembly can sit slightly proud in a pocket and get bumped, draining the new battery faster than normal use would.

The fob still doesn't work after a new battery
