Key Fob Shell or Full Remote? When a Case Swap Is Enough
Cracked cases and worn buttons are shell jobs; dead boards, water damage and lost fobs are not

A shell swap is enough when the fault is purely mechanical: a cracked or split case, worn-through button pads, a snapped key ring loop, or a broken blade tab on a flip or remote head key. In those cases the circuit board and transponder chip move into the new case and the vehicle never knows anything changed, so no programming is needed. A full remote is required when the board is dead, the fob has been in water, the buttons fail even with a fresh battery and clean contacts, or the fob is lost, because the transponder and rolling-code data live on the board and cannot be recreated in a shell. What a shell is, and what it is not
Every key fob is three things stacked together: the plastic case with its buttons, a circuit board that carries the UHF transmitter and battery contacts, and a transponder chip that answers the immobilizer. On a remote head key or flip key the transponder is usually a separate glass or carbon chip sitting in a pocket in the head; on a smart key it is normally soldered to the board. The blade, where there is one, is either moulded into the head or held by a pin or a screw.
A shell is only the first of those three. Aftermarket shells are sold with an uncut blade and no electronics, so the board and chip you move across are the only things the car recognises. That is the whole reason a shell swap needs no programming: the identity of the key is on the board, not in the plastic.
When a shell swap is the right call

Two checks before you commit. First, put a fresh battery in and confirm every button transmits on a remote tester or the vehicle. Second, confirm the car starts and, on a smart key, that passive entry works. If both pass, the board is good and a shell swap is safe.
The customer benefit is obvious: same key, no programming session, no risk of hitting a key-count limit or discovering a locked module. The locksmith benefit is time. A shell swap is a bench job.
When a shell will not fix it
- Dead board: no LED, no transmission on any button with a known-good battery. The transmitter or a surface-mount component has failed. A shell cannot help.
- Water damage: corrosion on the board, green or white deposits around the battery clip or crystal. Even if a button still works today, a corroded board fails unpredictably. Replace the remote.
- Buttons dead but start works: the transponder is fine but the remote side is gone. On a remote head key the customer can keep using it as a plain transponder key, but a shell will not restore the remote functions.
- Start works only when held against the start button: on a smart key this points to a failing board or a battery-circuit fault, not the case.
- Lost fob: nothing to move over. This is a full remote plus programming, and if it was the only key, an all-keys-lost job.
- Customer wants a different button layout: a shell with more buttons does not add functions; the board decides what the fob can do.

How to move the transponder chip safely
On remote head keys, flip keys and many older fobs the transponder is a separate component. Damage it and the customer loses the ability to start the car, which turns a bench job into a programming job.
- Open the old case along the seam with a plastic spudger, not a screwdriver; a screwdriver slips into the board.
- Photograph the inside before you lift anything so the board orientation and chip position are on record.
- Lift the board out by its edges. Never pry against the crystal (the small metal can) or the battery clip.
- Locate the transponder. A glass chip is a small cylinder, often black or clear, in a moulded pocket; a carbon chip is a flat rectangle. On some keys it is glued in place; warm the head gently or cut the glue rather than levering the chip.
- Seat the chip in the same pocket in the new shell in the same orientation. Orientation matters less than depth: the chip must sit where the car's coil expects it, which is why shells copy the original pocket.
- Fit the board, check the battery contacts touch the board pads, snap the case closed and test every button and a start.
If the chip is a soldered component on a smart key board, you are not moving a chip at all; the whole board moves, and the shell must be the exact style for that board.
Blades: cutting for a shell
A replacement shell ships with an uncut blade. Three ways to cut it:
- Duplicate the customer's existing blade on a duplicator, which is the normal route for a cracked-case job.
- Decode the door or ignition with a 2-in-1 tool and cut by code when the old blade is worn; which Lishi tool covers which make lists the keyways.
- Cut by code from the vehicle's key code if you can obtain it.
Check the blade profile before you order the shell. A Ford HU101 shell will not accept an HU198 blade; a Honda HON66 shell is different from the older HD103 profile; Toyota TOY43 and TOY48 heads are not interchangeable. The keyway names are explained in reading key blank cross-references.

FAQ
Does a key fob shell need to be programmed?
No. The programmed identity lives on the circuit board and transponder chip, and both move into the new shell, so the vehicle sees the same key.
Can I put my old chip in a new remote?
Usually not worth it. A new remote arrives with its own blank transponder that is programmed to the car; swapping the old chip in only makes sense if the new remote's chip type cannot be programmed and the old one is known to work.
How do I tell if the board is dead or just the battery?
Fit a new battery, clean the contacts, and test every button on a remote tester. No transmission on any button with a good battery means the board, not the battery.
Will a shell with more buttons add remote start or trunk release?
No. The board decides which functions exist. Extra buttons on a shell with no matching contacts do nothing.
What if the transponder chip breaks during the swap?
The car will no longer start with that key, and you are now on a full-remote-plus-programming job. Handle glass chips by the pocket, never by the chip, and photograph the layout before you start.
