Chevrolet & GMC Key Fob Replacement: OUC, HYQ & Global B Fobs

Replacing a Chevrolet or GMC key fob means sorting the vehicle into one of four GM systems: PassKey III / PK3+ transponder keys with a separate keyless entry remote (roughly 1997–2016), PEPS flip keys with a proximity board (2010–2020, OHT01060512), the first push-button smart keys (2015–2023, HYQ1AA / HYQ1EA / HYQ4AA / HYQ4EA / HYQ1ES, all ID46) and the Global B smart keys on 2021-and-later full-size trucks and SUVs (HUFGM2718 / YG0G21TB2, ID49). The FCC ID on the fob and the ignition style tell you which; the frequency then splits 315 MHz from 433/434 MHz within the same generation. How to identify the GM fob generation

GM kept the transponder key and the remote as separate parts far longer than most makes, which is why a 2012 Silverado job is often two SKUs: a B111 or B119 transponder key plus an OUC60270 keyless entry remote. From 2010 the cars moved to PEPS flip keys, and from 2015 the trucks and SUVs moved to push-button smart keys.

Within the smart-key generation, the letters carry meaning that is worth memorising: HYQ1 cases fit the trucks and full-size SUVs, HYQ4 cases fit the cars and crossovers, and the second letter usually tracks the frequency — HYQ1AA and HYQ4AA are 315 MHz, HYQ1EA, HYQ4EA and HYQ1ES are 433/434 MHz. Verify against the customer's existing fob, because the same model changed frequency mid-cycle.

The OUC60270 remotes cross to a long list of GM part numbers (15913415, 15913427, 20869057, 22951510 and others) that differ only by button layout, so match the button count and the number printed on the customer's remote. How Chevrolet and GMC fobs are programmed

• PassKey III and PK3+ transponder keys (Megamos ID13, ID46 Circle Plus): with a working key, the tool programs the new key in a few minutes through OBD. All keys lost triggers the well-known 30-minute relearn — three 10-minute security cycles with the key in the ignition — on most 1997–2016 GM vehicles, whether you use a tool or the onboard procedure.
• Separate keyless entry remotes (OUC60270, OUC6000066, M3N32337100): many 2006–2014 GM vehicles learn remotes onboard through the Driver Information Center "Relearn Remote Key" menu or the door-lock and ignition procedure; the 2014-and-later trucks generally need a tool. No transponder is involved, so a remote that will not learn is almost always a frequency or part-number mismatch.
• PEPS flip keys (OHT01060512, LXP-T003/T004): tool programming through OBD; add-a-key is usually fast, all keys lost runs the security wait.
• First-generation smart keys (HYQ1AA, HYQ1EA, HYQ4AA, HYQ4EA, HYQ1ES): tool programming. Some vehicles support an onboard add-a-key using two working fobs and the pocket in the console, but it is model-specific — verify on the vehicle.
• Global B smart keys (HUFGM2718 / YG0G21TB2): tool programming only, and the vehicle's secure gateway requires the programmer to authenticate through the manufacturer's server, so your tool needs current GM coverage and an online connection.

FAQ

What is the difference between HYQ1EA and HYQ1ES?

Both are 433/434 MHz ID46 smart keys for the Silverado and Sierra. HYQ1EA covers the 2019–2020 trucks and HYQ1ES covers 2019–2023 with a different part-number set (13522904, 13547803 and others), so match the part number on the customer's existing fob when the truck falls in the overlap.

Can a Chevy key fob be programmed without a tool?

Only the older separate keyless entry remotes (OUC60270 family) on 2006–2014 vehicles, using the DIC relearn menu or the onboard procedure. PassKey III transponder keys can also be relearned onboard with the 30-minute procedure when all keys are lost. PEPS flip keys and every smart key need an OBD programmer, and the 2021-and-later Global B trucks need one with online GM authentication.

Does a 2012 Silverado need one part or two?

Two: a B111 or B119-PT ID46 transponder key cut to the ignition and an OUC60270 keyless entry remote. The remote carries no chip, and the key carries no remote.

Why does the same Tahoe use both 315 MHz and 433 MHz smart keys?

GM ran HYQ1AA (315 MHz) and HYQ1EA (433 MHz) side by side on the 2015–2020 Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon depending on build and market. Read the FCC ID on the existing fob before ordering; a fob on the wrong frequency will not learn even though the case and chip match.
