VW & Audi Key Fob Replacement: ID48, MQB & Smart Keys

How to tell an ID48 car from an MQB car, which fob fits which model, and how each generation is programmed

Car Key Source Trade DeskSeptember 12, 2026 8 min read
Volkswagen flip key with ID48 transponder next to an Audi smart key

Volkswagen and Audi key fob replacement is decided by the immobilizer generation, not the badge: cars up to roughly 2016 use an ID48 (Megamos Crypto) transponder — remote flip keys such as the VW NBG010180T (PN 5K0837202AE) and Audi NBG009272T — while 2015-onward MQB-platform cars use a Megamos AES chip in fobs like the VW NBGFS93N and Audi NBGFS12A71. Audi's 2007–2016 A4, A5, Q5, A6, A7 and A8 smart keys (FCC ID IYZFBSB802) sit on a separate HITAG 2 / 46 system, and the 2004–2015 A6, Q7 and S6 flip remote uses an 8E chip. Read the FCC ID and the 8-character part number on the back of the fob, match the chip family, and program with a tool that supports that generation. Car Key Source stocks aftermarket fobs for each of these, one genuine OEM VW flip key, Xhorse MQB and Audi-style universal remotes, KEYDIY ID48 cloning chips and the Original Lishi HU66.

How do I tell an ID48 car from an MQB car?

The easiest signal is the part number on the fob. VW part numbers ending in 5K0 837 202 (A, AE, AK, R suffixes) are ID48-era flip keys; the 5K0 837 202 BJ flip key and Audi numbers such as BVD 837 220A belong to the MQB / Megamos AES generation. If the fob is missing, platform decides it: MQB arrived with the Mk7 Golf and spread to the Jetta, Passat, Tiguan, A3, S3 and Q3 over the following model years, not in the same year on every model. Verify on the vehicle, ideally by reading the immobilizer with your tool before you order.

Which fob fits which VW or Audi model?

  • VW NBG010180T flip key, PN 5K0837202AE / AK / R (2011–2017): Beetle, CC, EOS, Golf, GTI, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan. The genuine OEM version is listed for 2010–2016 and adds the Touareg.
  • VW NBG009066T smart key (2006–2015): CC and Passat with push-button start. IYZVWTOUA (2011–2017): Touareg only.
  • VW NBGFS93N MQB flip key, PN 5K0837202BJ (2017–2018): Jetta and Passat.
  • VW Routan fobik, M3N5WY783X / IYZ-C01C (2008–2018): 3-button and 7-button versions; program it the Chrysler way — see the Dodge / Ram key fob programming guide.
  • Audi NBG009272T flip key (2005–2010): A3, S3, A4, S4, A6, S6, A8, S8, TT. IYZ 3314 8E flip remote (2004–2015): A6, Q7, S6.
  • Audi IYZFBSB802 smart key (2007–2016): A4, S4, A5, S5, Q5, A6, S6, A7, S7, A8, S8. Two listings: PN 8T0959754G (cross-referenced to 8T0959754B, 8K0959754B, 4G0959754G, 4H0959754G) and PN 8K0959754F for 2008–2012 A4, A5, Q5, S4, S5. Match the 959 754 suffix on the customer's key.
  • Audi NBGFS12A71 MQB remote, PN BVD 837 220A (2015–2018): A3, S3, Q3. The pre-MQB Q3 (2013–2018) uses the 8X0 837 220C / 220A ID48 remote, matched by part number because that listing carries no FCC ID.

FCC pages: NBG010180T, IYZFBSB802, NBGFS12A71.

What key blank and Lishi do VW and Audi use?

The HU66 keyway covers most VW, Audi and Porsche locks from the late 1990s through the MQB era — an internal two-track profile cut on a high-security machine. Car Key Source stocks the Original Lishi HU66 2-in-1 pick and decoder for ignition, door and trunk. Some of the newest models use a different profile; verify on the door cylinder before you commit to a blade.

Aftermarket or genuine OEM on a Volkswagen?

There is one genuine OEM VW row in the catalog: the 2010–2016 Volkswagen 4-button remote flip key, NBG010180T, PN 5K0837202AE (OEM). It is the same FCC ID and part-number family as the aftermarket flip key, on ID48 CAN and 315 MHz, so the decision is about the customer, not the car. A lease return or a customer who wants a VW-logo key are the usual reasons to pay for the genuine part. Everything else on the VW and Audi list is aftermarket, graded AM, and is listed against the vehicles it programs to — the programming guarantee applies: if a key or remote won't program on the vehicle we listed it against, it is refunded within 30 days of delivery and we pay the return freight, provided the vehicle matches the listing and the part comes back resaleable. More genuine OEM parts across makes are on the OEM hub.

How are VW and Audi keys programmed?

ID48-era VW and Audi keys are a long-established OBD job. Add-a-key on a car with a working key is routine on Xhorse VVDI2 / Key Tool Plus, Autel IM508 / IM608 and similar; all-keys-lost usually means reading immobilizer data (the Xhorse workflow collects data from the car and calculates the 48 key online). Cloning is the other route on ID48 cars: the KEYDIY ID48 VW glass cloning chip, 10-pack is written by the KD-X2, which copies an existing key without touching the car's immobilizer.

MQB cars are a different job. Megamos AES keys need a tool with MQB coverage and, on most tool platforms, an online calculation or a server token per key; check the exact MQB support list for your tool before you take the deposit. Audi smart keys on the 2007–2016 B8 / C7 / D4 platforms (IYZFBSB802) use HITAG 2 and are handled by OBD on some tools and by reading the BCM2 on the bench for all-keys-lost on others. The 8E-chip A6, Q7 and S6 flip remote needs a tool that specifically lists 8E support.

One rule that saves return trips: on MQB, a fob that is generated but not adapted will lock and unlock but will not start the car, so finish the immobilizer adaptation step before you hand it over. See how to program a key fob for the tool side.

Are Xhorse universal remotes a good fit for VW and Audi?

For the remote and flip-key generations, yes, if you run Xhorse equipment. Car Key Source lists the Xhorse XKMQB5EN VW MQB-style 3-button wired remote, the XSDM04EN MQB-style 3-button proximity flip key, the XSGA80EN Volkswagen-style 4-button XM38 remote, the XEB520EN B5-style flip key with XT27B super chip, the XNAU22EN Audi-style 4-button wireless flip key and the XSADJ1EN Audi 754J-style smart key on 315/433/868 MHz. KEYDIY's equivalent is the ZB26-4 Audi-style 4-button smart key.

A universal remote is generated by your tool, so its coverage is the tool vendor's vehicle list rather than a vehicle-specific listing, and the shell is "style of" rather than a match. For when that is the right call, read universal remote or vehicle-specific fob.

FAQ

What chip is in a Volkswagen key?

Volkswagen used the ID48 (Megamos Crypto) transponder, in CAN form on 2010–2017 flip keys such as NBG010180T, and moved to Megamos AES on MQB-platform cars from around 2015–2017 depending on model. Read the part number on the fob or the immobilizer with your tool to confirm which one you have.

Can I clone a VW ID48 key instead of programming it?

Yes, on ID48 cars with a working key. A KD-X2 writes a KEYDIY ID48 glass cloning chip from the existing key, so the car's immobilizer is not touched; the remote portion still needs to be generated or programmed separately, and MQB Megamos AES keys cannot be cloned this way.

Is the Audi IYZFBSB802 smart key the same for A4, A5 and Q5?

The FCC ID is shared across the 2007–2016 A4, S4, A5, S5, Q5, A6, S6, A7, S7, A8 and S8, but the Audi part-number suffix differs by model and year. Match the 8T0, 8K0, 4G0 or 4H0 959 754 number on the customer's key to the listing's part number or cross-references before ordering.

Is there a genuine OEM Volkswagen key at Car Key Source?

Yes, one: the 2010–2016 VW 4-button remote flip key, FCC ID NBG010180T, PN 5K0837202AE, graded OEM. Every other VW and Audi row is aftermarket and is described as such.
