How to Change the Battery in a Toyota Key Fob

Smart keys, remote head keys and Lexus variants — which cell each takes and how to open them without breaking tabs.

A dead Toyota key fob battery is a five-minute fix, and in most cases the cell you need is a CR2032 — the same coin battery sold at any pharmacy. What trips people up is opening the fob. Toyota smart keys hide the seam behind the emergency blade, older remote-head keys split along the edge of the plastic head, and prying at the wrong spot is how tabs get snapped. Below is the technique for each Toyota fob family, the battery each takes, and what to do when a fresh cell doesn't bring the fob back.

First, identify which Toyota fob you have

Toyota has used four broad fob families over the last twenty years. They don't all open the same way or take the same cell.

  • Smart key (proximity fob) — no blade sticking out; a latch releases a hidden emergency key. Push-button-start vehicles: most 2010-and-up Camry, Avalon, Highlander, RAV4, Prius, Tacoma and Tundra trims, plus nearly every Lexus.
  • Remote head key — one-piece key with the buttons moulded into the plastic head. Very common on 2007–2018 Camry, Corolla, Sienna, Tacoma and RAV4.
  • Flip / switchblade remote — the blade folds into the body and pops out at a button press. Used on some Corolla, Camry and Yaris trims, and the most common upgrade shell.
  • Separate keyless entry remote — a small standalone remote riding next to a plain metal key. Mostly 1998–2010.

One rule saves a wasted trip: read the number stamped on the cell you pull out and match it exactly. Toyota revised board designs mid-generation more than once, so two identical-looking fobs from the same model year can take different batteries.

Treat this table as a starting point, not gospel. Trim level, market and mid-cycle board revisions all shift which cell a given fob uses, which is why the old battery is the only reliable reference you have on hand.

Changing the battery in a Toyota smart key

This covers the button-start proximity fobs — the ones with a pull-out emergency blade.

  1. Find the release. On most Toyota smart keys it is a small sliding latch or a button on the back edge. Slide it over and pull the metal emergency blade straight out.
  2. Look into the empty blade channel. There is a narrow notch cut into the plastic, sized for a small flathead screwdriver or a coin.
  3. Insert the flathead into the notch and twist — do not lever it like a crowbar. The two halves of the case pop apart with an audible click.
  4. Work a fingernail around the remaining seam to separate the halves fully. If it resists, you are probably twisting in the wrong slot; look for the one that lines up with the internal seam.
  5. Some Toyota and Lexus smart keys have the circuit board sitting over the battery. If so, lift the board out gently by its edges.
  6. Note which way the positive (+) face of the old cell points, then drop the new CR2032 in the same orientation. Handle it by the edges only — fingerprints on the flat faces leave a film that causes intermittent contact months later.
  7. Snap the halves back together, reinsert the emergency blade until it clicks, and test every button plus proximity unlock next to the vehicle.

Changing the battery in a Toyota remote head key

Remote head keys have no removable blade, so the entry point is different.

  1. Look along the edge of the plastic head for a small rectangular slot, usually near the key ring loop.
  2. Before prying, check under the key ring loop and on the back face for a small Phillips screw. A handful of Toyota remote heads are screwed shut, and twisting a screwed case is how the tabs break.
  3. Insert a coin or a small flathead into the slot and twist. The head separates into a front and back shell.
  4. Lift the old cell — usually a CR2016 — out from under its retaining clip. These boards take a thinner battery than a smart key, so a CR2032 will not seat correctly. Match the number.
  5. Press the new cell under the clip, align the shells, and squeeze until the perimeter closes flush with no gap.
  6. Test lock, unlock and panic from about ten feet away. Noticeably shorter range usually means the shells aren't fully seated on the contacts.

Lexus fobs work the same way

Lexus smart keys share their platform with Toyota, so the technique above transfers directly: pull the emergency blade, twist a flathead in the exposed notch. Most take a CR2032, though a few older Lexus remotes use a CR1616. The exception is the flat card key offered on some Lexus and Toyota trims — those separate along the card edge with a plastic pry tool, use a thinner cell, and crack far more easily than a conventional fob.

Starting a Toyota when the fob battery is completely dead

You are not stranded. Toyota builds in two backups.

Getting in. Pull the emergency blade out of the smart key and use the driver's door lock cylinder. On many newer models that cylinder sits behind a small plastic cap on the handle — pop it off with the blade or a trim tool. Opening the door this way often triggers the alarm; starting the vehicle clears it.

Starting it. On push-button-start Toyotas, press the brake, hold the fob flat against the START button, and press the button with the fob still against it. The vehicle reads the fob's transponder chip inductively at close range, so no battery is needed for that handshake. If it doesn't take, reposition so a different face of the fob contacts the button.

On older key-turn Toyotas a dead remote battery never affects starting at all — the transponder chip in the key head is passive and draws power from the ring around the ignition cylinder.

When a fresh battery doesn't fix it

If the fob is still dead or intermittent after a correct replacement, work through these in order.

  • Check the new cell. A fresh CR2032 should read roughly 3.0–3.2 volts on a multimeter. Old shelf stock is a more common culprit than people expect.
  • Clean the contacts. Corrosion or finger oils on the terminals cause intermittent drops. Isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, then let it dry fully.
  • Look for water damage. Green or white residue on the board means moisture got in, and that fob is usually finished.
  • Press the buttons and feel for mush. Worn pads and cracked solder joints fail gradually — the fob works at two feet but not at twenty.
  • Consider resync. A small number of remotes need re-pairing after a power loss. That is a programming job, not a battery job; how to program a key fob covers onboard versus tool procedures.

If the shell is cracked or the board is corroded, replacement is the cheaper path. Match the new fob by FCC ID rather than by vehicle year — that identifier is printed on the back of the original and is the only reliable way to guarantee it will pair. FAQ

What battery does a Toyota key fob take? Most Toyota smart keys use a CR2032. Most Toyota remote head keys use a CR2016. Older separate remotes sometimes use a CR1616. Because Toyota revised boards mid-generation, the cell you remove is a more reliable answer than any chart.

Do I need to reprogram my Toyota fob after changing the battery? No. Pairing data is stored in non-volatile memory on the fob and the vehicle, so it survives a power loss. If the fob genuinely stops working after a correct battery swap, the problem is the fob or the contacts, not lost programming.

How long should a Toyota key fob battery last? Two to four years is typical. Proximity fobs drain faster than button remotes because they wake and poll whenever they are near the vehicle — keeping the spare inside the house next to the driveway will shorten its life noticeably.

Can I use a CR2025 instead of a CR2032? It will physically fit, but it is thinner and holds less charge. You will get shorter life and a real risk of intermittent contact as the case flexes. Use the specified cell.
