Honda Key Fob Programming

Remote head keys, smart entry fobs, and why the Honda part-number suffix matters more than the FCC ID.

Most people searching for honda key fob programming are not planning to do the work alone — they are working out what has to be bought and who has to touch the vehicle. This page answers both halves: what the Honda system actually requires, and which parts to have in hand before the job starts.

The system on these vehicles

Honda uses Honda Smart Entry. Honda runs two families side by side well into the 2010s: remote head keys with an embedded transponder, and Smart Entry proximity fobs on higher trims of the same model year. The 72147-xxx part number, including its suffix, is what actually decides fit — the FCC ID is shared far too widely to rely on alone.

Before you order the fob

The wrong fob is the single most common reason a programming job stalls. Confirm all four of these against the customer's original, not against the model name:

  • FCC ID — printed on the back of the original fob.
  • Part number — ties the fob to the trim level and its button set.
  • Frequency — 315 MHz and 433 MHz parts look identical and are not interchangeable.
  • Battery type — CR2032, CR2450 and friends; worth stocking alongside the fob.

If any of those are unknown, run the original through Find My Fob or search by FCC ID before you commit to a part.

Programming a Honda fob, step by step

Applies to: Honda / Acura keyless-entry remotes on bladed-key vehicles (roughly 1997-2015) with factory keyless entry. Timing is strict: each step must follow within about 4 seconds.

You need: every remote you want working. Entering the mode erases previously learned remotes.

  1. Close all doors, the hood and the tailgate, and sit in the driver's seat with all remotes in hand.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON (II).
  3. Within 4 seconds press LOCK or UNLOCK on one remote.
  4. Within 4 seconds turn the ignition OFF.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 two more times using the same remote.
  6. Turn the ignition to ON (II) a fourth time and press LOCK or UNLOCK again. The door lock actuators cycle — that confirms you are in programming mode.
  7. Press LOCK or UNLOCK once on each remote you want stored, including remotes that already worked. Up to three or four codes can be held depending on model.
  8. Turn the ignition OFF, remove the key, and test each remote.

Acura and 2016+ Honda proximity fobs are programmed through the diagnostic port and are not covered by this onboard sequence.

When all keys are lost

All-keys-lost on Honda immobiliser vehicles typically needs a programmer with Honda coverage and, on later models, a security-code or online authorisation step. Older remote head key platforms are considerably more forgiving than the current Smart Entry cars.
