Ford Key Fob Programming
How Ford PEPS and remote-head keys are learned, what all-keys-lost really takes, and the fobs to have on the shelf first.

Most people searching for ford key fob programming are not planning to do the work alone — they are working out what has to be bought and who has to touch the vehicle. This page answers both halves: what the Ford system actually requires, and which parts to have in hand before the job starts.
The system on these vehicles
Ford uses PEPS (Passive Entry Passive Start). Most 2015 and newer Ford vehicles use PEPS proximity fobs, while older trucks and SUVs run remote head keys with a 4D63 80-bit transponder. The two families are programmed very differently, so identify which one the vehicle carries before you quote — the FCC ID on the customer's original is the fastest tell.
Before you order the fob
The wrong fob is the single most common reason a programming job stalls. Confirm all four of these against the customer's original, not against the model name:
- FCC ID — printed on the back of the original fob.
- Part number — ties the fob to the trim level and its button set.
- Frequency — 315 MHz and 433 MHz parts look identical and are not interchangeable.
- Battery type — CR2032, CR2450 and friends; worth stocking alongside the fob.
If any of those are unknown, run the original through Find My Fob or search by FCC ID before you commit to a part.
Programming a Ford fob, step by step
The verified onboard procedure for Ford is being reviewed by our trade desk before it goes up. We do not publish programming sequences we have not confirmed on the bench — the wrong sequence can lock a module.

Applies to: Ford / Lincoln remote-head-key vehicles (roughly 1998-2016) that support onboard remote learning. PEPS proximity fobs and 2017+ vehicles are diagnostic-tool jobs — do not attempt the sequence below on them.
You need: two already-working keys, plus every remote that must work when you finish.
- Sit in the vehicle with all doors closed and all remotes in hand.
- Insert the first working key, turn the ignition from OFF to RUN (do not crank), then back to OFF, and remove the key.
- Within 10 seconds, insert the second working key and turn the ignition from OFF to RUN, then back to OFF, and remove it. The door locks cycle to confirm the module has entered remote-learn mode.
- Within 20 seconds, press any button on the remote you are adding. The locks cycle once to confirm it was learned.
- Repeat step 4 for each additional remote, including remotes that already worked — entering learn mode clears the old list on most platforms.
- Turn the ignition to RUN, or wait 20 seconds, to exit. Test lock, unlock, trunk and panic from outside the vehicle.
If you only have one working key, or the vehicle uses a PEPS proximity fob, the remote must be learned with a programmer that has current Ford coverage; expect the module's security wait timer before it will accept a new key.

When all keys are lost
All-keys-lost on Ford PEPS vehicles is a diagnostic job, not an onboard one. Expect to need a programmer with current Ford coverage, and budget for the security wait timer the module enforces before it will accept a new key. Many 2020+ models also require the onboard learning path to be enabled in software when no backup slot is fitted.
