Motorcycle Key Replacement for Locksmiths: Kawasaki and Yamaha Keys, Transponders and Blanks

How to identify Kawasaki and Yamaha keys, mechanical or transponder, and what to order

Car Key Source Trade Desk3 novembre 2026 5 min de lecture

Motorcycle keys are a different job from car keys: most Kawasaki keys are plain mechanical blanks with a plastic head, while many Yamaha keys carry a transponder chip that has to be cloned or programmed. The right part depends on the bike's model and year, so match the blank code stamped on the key (or the key's chip type) before you order anything. This guide covers how to identify Kawasaki and Yamaha motorcycle keys, what separates mechanical from transponder, and what a locksmith needs on the bench.

Quick answer: Kawasaki and Yamaha key types

For Kawasaki, the catalog we stock is mostly mechanical key blanks with codes like KW14, KW15, KW16, KA14 and the X-series (X255 to X262). Kawasaki also has a key shell for transponder-equipped bikes. For Yamaha, there are mechanical blanks in the YH and YM series plus three transponder keys in the ZD23 and ZD24 families.

MakeKey typeCodes we stock (examples)
KawasakiMechanical metal blankKA2, KA14 / X103, X255-X262, KAW-5 / KW12, KAW-7
KawasakiPlastic head keyKW14, KW14R, KW15-P, KW16-P, KW16C-P
KawasakiTransponder key shellILCO Kawasaki shell (listed 2002-2018)
YamahaMechanical metal blankYH47, YH48, YH49, YM55, YM56, YM63, YH65
YamahaTransponder keyZD23RT5, ZD24 (NOVA ID T5), ZD24 (MEGAMOS ID 48)

Year ranges and fitment vary by model. Always confirm against the key you are copying rather than trusting a year alone.

How to identify a motorcycle key

Start with the key itself. Most blanks have a code stamped on the bow or blade, such as KW14 or YH48. That code, or its cross-reference (an ILCO X-number, a JMA number), tells you the keyway. Our guide to reading key blank cross-references explains how those numbers map between brands, and the key blank and keyway guide covers the common car and motorcycle profiles.

If the key has no stamp, work through three checks:

  1. Brand and model year. Note the make, model and year of the bike, since keyways changed over time.
  2. Head type. A plastic head that is thicker than a plain blade usually houses a transponder chip. A flat metal-bow key is almost always mechanical only.
  3. Blade profile. Compare the blade against known blanks, noting single-sided versus double-sided cuts and the number of cuts.

If you cannot identify it, send the details through Find My Fob or ask the trade desk for a sourcing check.

Mechanical versus transponder motorcycle keys

A mechanical key turns the ignition and the fork or seat lock and nothing else. It can be cut on a standard machine once you have the right blank. A transponder key also contains a chip that the bike's immobilizer reads, so a correctly cut blade alone will not start the engine.

Our transponder key explainer and chip ID guide cover chips in detail. For the motorcycle keys we stock, the chip details are:

  • ZD24 with NOVA ID T5: a cloning-type chip, listed for 1998-2021 Yamaha motorcycles.
  • ZD24 with MEGAMOS ID 48: listed for 2015-2018 Yamaha motorcycles.
  • ZD23RT5: a Yamaha transponder key listed for 1982-2021, with the chip not specified in the catalog entry, so check the part before you commit.

If you are unsure what chip a customer's bike uses, identify it before buying. A wrong chip is the most common reason a motorcycle transponder key will not start the bike.

What you need to cut and program them

For mechanical keys you need the correct blank and a cutting machine that handles motorcycle profiles. Plastic-head Kawasaki blanks cut like any other single-profile blank, but check that your jaws grip the thinner stock. Our car key cutting machine guide covers what to look for.

For transponder keys, expect one of two paths. A cloning chip is copied from an existing working key with a compatible duplicator, so you need the original key present. Where there is no working key, you need a programmer that supports the bike's immobilizer. Support for motorcycles is narrower than for cars, so confirm your tool covers the make and year before quoting a customer. We do not publish a universal procedure here because it varies by model.

Tip: quote and order the chip type that matches the original, and keep the old key's blade stamp noted on the job sheet.

Parts we have for these keys

A selection of stocked parts (see the full lists on Kawasaki and Yamaha):

  • KW14 Kawasaki plastic-head key
  • KW16-P / X91 / X105 Kawasaki plastic-head key
  • X255 Kawasaki key blank
  • KA14 / X103 Kawasaki key, pack of 10
  • 2008-2020 Kawasaki Ninja KAW-10-P mechanical key
  • 1998-2021 Yamaha ZD24 transponder key (NOVA ID T5)
  • 2015-2018 Yamaha ZD24 transponder key (MEGAMOS ID 48)
  • 1982-2021 Yamaha ZD23RT5 transponder key

Brands in this range include ILCO and JMA. None of these motorcycle keys are listed as genuine OEM, so treat them as aftermarket-grade parts and set the customer's expectations accordingly. Browse all brands for the wider range.

FAQ

What is the difference between a Kawasaki key blank and a transponder key? A blank is a mechanical key with no electronics. A transponder key also holds a chip the bike's immobilizer must recognize, so it must be cloned or programmed.

Can I cut a Yamaha motorcycle key from the code stamped on it? Often yes for mechanical keys: the stamp (YH48, YM63 and so on) identifies the blank. For transponder keys you must also match the chip.

Do all Kawasaki motorcycles use a mechanical key? No. Many are mechanical, but some models are fitted with an immobilizer, and a transponder key shell exists in the catalog for those. Check the specific model and year.

What if I cannot identify the key? Photograph the blade and head, note the bike's make, model and year, and ask the trade desk. A sourcing check is quicker than ordering by guess.
