Car Key Cutting Machines: A Buyer's Guide for Locksmiths

Manual vs automatic, which key types each handles, and how to match a machine to your shop

Car Key Source Trade Desk27 octobre 2026 6 min de lecture

If you are choosing a car key cutting machine for a locksmith shop, the short answer is this: buy for the keys you actually cut. A portable automatic machine such as the Xhorse Dolphin II handles most edge-cut and laser (sidewinder) automotive keys on the van or in a small shop, a manual duplicator only makes sense if your work is mostly standard edge-cut blanks, and a full-size shop machine is worth it only at high daily volume. The machine is only half the job: you also need the right blank, the right code or decoder, and a programmer for the transponder or remote.

Manual vs automatic: the real difference

A manual duplicator traces an original key with a stylus while a cutter follows it. It is simple, cheap to run and fine for single-sided edge-cut keys when you have a good original. It cannot cut by code, it depends on the quality of the original, and it struggles with laser-cut keys.

An automatic (code) machine clamps the blank, reads or is told the cuts, and cuts to depth and spacing data. That is what you need for all keys lost work, because you often start with a code from a decoder, a key-by-VIN lookup or a Lishi read rather than a physical key. Automatic machines vary a lot: compact units are built for mobile work, while bench machines trade portability for rigidity and speed.

Which key types a machine must handle

Before you compare specs, list the key profiles you cut every week. In automotive work they fall into a few groups:

  • Edge-cut keys: the classic double-sided key, still common on older vehicles and many emergency or valet keys.
  • Laser / sidewinder keys: the milled track in the blade, common on VW/Audi (HU66), BMW (HU92), many Honda and Toyota (TOY43 and similar) and Hyundai/Kia keys. Our key blank and keyway guide lists the codes by make.
  • Tibbe and cruciform keys: older European and some specialty profiles; check whether a machine supports them before you assume it does.
  • Smart-key emergency blades: small, thin blades that need the right clamp and good alignment.

Support for a given keyway depends on the machine's clamps, cutters and software database, and it changes by model and firmware, so confirm the exact profile list with the maker before you buy. We do not claim any machine cuts every key.

What to check before you buy

  1. Profile coverage. Match the machine's supported blank list against your last few months of jobs, not against the brochure.
  2. Cutter and clamp availability. A machine is only as useful as the cutters and clamps you can get quickly. Ask what a replacement cutter costs and how often you will need one.
  3. Power and portability. Can it run from your vehicle inverter or a battery pack? Does it fit where you work?
  4. Code input. Can it cut from a code, from a decoder read, or only from an original key? All keys lost jobs need code cutting.
  5. Calibration. Cuts that are a hair off cause stuck keys and worn locks. Learn the calibration routine and check it against a known good key.
  6. Software and support. Look at how updates are delivered and what happens when you need help.

Matching the machine to the shop

Mobile locksmith. You want a portable automatic. The Xhorse Dolphin II XP-005L, which we stock with an adjustable screen, is the kind of unit this role calls for, and it is also available from us bundled with programmers such as the Autel MaxiIM KM100 or Xhorse VVDI Key Tool Max Pro so the cutting and programming steps come from one order. The Xhorse Condor Dolphin XP-007 is listed in our catalog as a manual key cutting machine, for shops that prefer that style of cutting.

Shop with walk-in traffic. A bench machine plus a portable one for field jobs is the common pairing. The bench machine takes the volume; the portable one goes on the van.

Occasional cutter. If you cut a handful of keys a week, a basic machine and a good decoder usually beats a large machine you rarely use. Pair it with a pick and decoder such as the Original Lishi HU66 or TOY43AT to get the cuts without the original key.

Price bands: what to expect

Prices move with exchange rates, bundles and promotions, so treat any figure as a typical range and ask for a current quote. As a rough guide, a manual duplicator sits at the low end, a portable automatic machine costs noticeably more, and a full bench machine costs several times a portable unit. Bundles with a programmer usually cost less than buying the two separately. Do not forget running costs: cutters, clamps, blanks and software renewals add up over the life of the machine.

Maintenance that keeps cuts accurate

  • Clean swarf from the clamps and jaws after every job; chips under the blank cause bad cuts.
  • Replace cutters when cut quality drops, not when they break.
  • Re-run calibration after moving or knocking the machine and check against a known good key.
  • Keep the machine dry and covered when transporting it in a van.
  • Keep a spare cutter and clamp set in the van so one broken part does not end the day.

The blanks matter as much as the machine

A machine cannot fix a poor blank. Wrong keyway, wrong shoulder or a soft blank causes the same symptoms as bad calibration. Buy blanks by code and cross-reference against the original; our guide to reading key blank cross-references covers Ilco, JMA and Silca numbering. We stock more than a thousand mechanical key blanks, with Ilco among the brands, so you can match blank and machine from one account.

FAQ

Can one machine cut every car key? No. Coverage depends on the clamps, cutters and software for each profile. Check the supported keyway list for your top jobs before buying.

Do I need a programmer if I have a cutting machine? For anything with a transponder chip or remote, yes. The machine only cuts the blade. See our programming tool comparison and guide to choosing a programmer.

Manual or automatic for all keys lost? Automatic. All keys lost work usually starts from a code, which a manual duplicator cannot cut.

Do you sell cutting machines? We stock a small range of Xhorse machines and bundles alongside our key and fob catalog. Trade accounts can ask the desk for current availability.
