How to identify the Chrysler-group fob generation

The key style is the quickest read. A Y160 or Y164 blade with a plastic head or a remote head is Sentry Key. A rectangular fob that pushes into a slot in the dash and twists is a Fobik. A rounded fob with a hidden emergency blade and a push-button start is a smart key, and the model year separates the ID46 and ID4A smart keys.

The trap is that Chrysler re-used FCC IDs across the ID46 and ID4A changeover. A GQ4-53T for a 2015 Ram is ID46 (4-button) or ID4A (5-button); a GQ4-53T for a 2016 Cherokee is ID4A. M3N-40821302 on a 2014 Charger is ID46, while the same FCC ID on a 2018 Compass is ID4A. Match on the part number printed on the customer's fob and confirm the chip with your programmer at the changeover years.

Two Ram notes. The 2019 Ram 1500 (DT body) moved to the OHT-4882056 smart key, but the 2019–2024 Ram 1500 Classic (DS body) and the 2019–2020 HD trucks kept the older styles — GQ4-54T and GQ4-76T respectively — so confirm the body style before ordering. And the Ram 5-button Fobik (GQ4-53T) carries the ID4A chip while the 4-button Fobik on the same truck carries ID46; they are not interchangeable.

Remote functions on the older remote head keys learn with the tool or, on some models, through an onboard sequence — verify on the vehicle.
• Fobik keys (M3N5WY783X, IYZ-C01C, GQ4-53T, M3N32297100): tool programming through OBD with the PIN. Add-a-key is quick; all keys lost on the WIN (Wireless Ignition Node) vehicles is the same route with a security wait on some models.
• Keyless Enter-N-Go smart keys, ID46 (M3N-40821302, GQ4-54T): tool programming through OBD with the PIN. All keys lost is routine on the 2011–2017 vehicles.
• HITAG AES fobs, 2018 and later: tool programming, but the 2018-and-later FCA vehicles carry a Security Gateway Module (SGW) that blocks write commands on the OBD port. You need either a 12+8 bypass cable connected behind the radio or on the gateway, or a tool with AutoAuth access, before the programmer can register keys. The 2014–2017 ID4A vehicles generally do not have the gateway — verify on the vehicle.

A Fobik is Chrysler's slot-style key used from about 2008 to 2018: a rectangular fob with the ID46 transponder and remote inside that pushes into the ignition and twists, with a separate CY24 emergency blade. It programs like a transponder key, through OBD with the PIN, and never learns onboard.

Is M3N-40821302 an ID46 or an ID4A fob?

Both, depending on the vehicle. On the 2011–2020 300, Charger, Challenger, Dart and Journey and the 2014–2022 Durango and Grand Cherokee it carries a PCF7945A ID46 chip; on the 2017–2022 Compass it carries a PCF7953M ID4A chip, and the closely related M3M40821302 for the 2015–2023 cars is also ID4A. Do I need a security gateway bypass to program a 2019 Ram key?
